President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Israel's strike on Hamas leaders in Qatar. He stated this action could jeopardize the Gaza ceasefire talks.
"I am not happy about this whole situation," Trump told reporters Tuesday night. "It is not a good situation. We want the hostages back. We are not happy about how this happened."
He added, "I will give a full statement tomorrow. I was very unhappy about every part of this."
These events highlighted the shaky nature of Trump's peace efforts in Gaza. They also showed his difficult relationship with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Furthermore, they complicated his efforts to maintain good relations with Gulf allies.
Some of Trump's advisors were also upset about Israel's strike in Doha. Many felt frustrated they could not give input or warn Qatar.
A US official said Trump learned of the strike just before it happened. Israel did not inform him directly. Instead, Chairman of the Joint Staff Gen. Dan Caine told him. Another US official stated Trump then told White House envoy Steve Witkoff to brief Qatar. Witkoff has a long history with Qatari officials.
However, a US official told CNN that by the time Witkoff could reach them, it was too late. Adding to the anger, Witkoff had met with Ron Dermer, a top Netanyahu advisor, the day before. The impending strikes were not mentioned during that meeting.
